Wireweed
Wireweed

As the name suggests, Wireweed is a wiry like tough weed which almost looks like the plant itself is an amalgamation of wires spreading out from the centre of the weed outwards in all directions, to which some rather unattractive leaves have been attached.

Wireweed is a dark green and very low growing weed which is most prolific in paving, gardens, lawns and absolutely any tiny little space wherein it can find a nook to germinate its seed. Even in the most unlikeliest of places we can find Wireweed growing.

Once established in paving for example, it will continue to seed prolifically to infect the rest of the paving too, proving to be a real nuisance to stay on top of in its removal.

Tiny white flowers are a hallmark of Wireweed, and its deep tap root can make its removal quite difficult if the weed is situated in tiny cracks.

Botanical name: Polygonum aviculare

Also known as: knotgrass, knotweed, birdweed, pigweed, lowgrass

Control Of Wireweed

Lawn mowing is of no use in controlling Wireweed as its stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds all grow so low to the ground as to be below lawn mowing height.

Wireweed can be spot treated with Glyphosate wherever found, and special care should of course be taken whenever spot treating any types of weeds in lawns with Glyphosate, as this herbicide will kill any and every plant it comes into contact with, including our lawns.

Removal by hand of Wireweed in lawns should be done using a small digging tool or knife to help to remove the deep tap root.

Some general weed sprays for lawns will kill Wireweed infestations in lawns also.

Wireweed is an Annual, though it can survive Winters especially if no frost is present. Regardless of this, and even if the weeds do die out in our yards over Winter, we can expect even more Wireweed next season due to its heavy seeding.
