Continuing To Mow Lawns Over Winter
Continuing To Mow Lawns Over Winter

Whether or not to continue mowing our lawns over the Winter months depends on several factors, the first being the climate of where we live, whereby the warmer the temperature over Winter the more growth our lawns will continue to produce, therefore requiring ongoing lawn mowing.

Sometimes in warmer climates such as Perth and Brisbane, lawn growth rates over Winter can vary over different parts of a city, and can depend on soil type, moisture retention in the soil, any protection from cold winds, the lawn variety being used and its suitability to the environment where it’s being grown. All of these factors can influence the growth rates of lawns and whether or not they will require ongoing mowing over Winter.

Another factor to consider in warmer climates is that some lawns may not look like they’re growing much at all over some weeks of Winter, and so it may be tempting to let the lawn mowing go for a lot longer between cuts. However Winter lawns can play tricks on the eye sometimes when they can look like they’re not growing much vertically with extra leaf growth, which may be true, but instead the lawn may be putting its growing energy into developing its thatch layer instead. Lawns and plants will use their available energy reserves for different purposes throughout the seasons of the year, so it can be wise to continue with ongoing lawn mowing over winter with some lawns to ensure that their thatch layer is not increasing too rapidly and may then require cutting back in the Spring.

Weed Control With Lawn Mowing

Some lawns are more prone to weeds than others, and some may have very active weed germination going on over every Winter, that the lawn may be overrun by weeds during the wet and wild weather.

Regular lawn mowing can help to aid in weed control in these situations, so that the ongoing lawn mowing will continue to remove new weed seeds as they are being produced by the weeds already present in the lawn. Fewer weed seeds being deposited back into the soil is an obvious form of weed control that can be utilised all year round as a good management program for our lawns.

We can easily imagine that if we had any weed problem at all in our lawns each Winter, what would happen if we did none or very little lawn mowing at all. We would be sitting back watching as those weeds got bigger and bigger and started producing flowers and seeds in their life cycle, only to then watch all of those new weed seeds going back into our lawns and garden beds for next year’s even worse bloom of weeds.

Clean, Trim and Tidy Lawns Are Awesome

Even though our lawns may not be growing as much over Winter, they still do become untidy and a little or even a lot messier looking should we not be actively taking care of those lawns during the colder months.

Lawn edges can still become at least a little overgrown, lawn growth rates may be uneven and will make the lawn look untidy, and flying debris does land all over our lawn scapes as the wind loves to blow mess around of all kinds, particularly leaf material from everywhere, this is more true if we have trees near our lawns that drop a lot of leaf matter during the winter months.

Paving, walkways, and footpaths around lawns too can all become messy over Winter with debris flying around everywhere.

A lawn mowing with edging can certainly bring the outside of our houses and yards back to looking their best over Winter, making our homes exteriors look clean, trim and tidy.

A quality lawn mowing contractor should be blowing all leaf material from surrounding paths back onto the lawn before lawn mowing is done, thereby cleaning up the entire exterior of the home to a meticulous standard during a standard lawn mowing service, making our homes and yards look awesome, even over the sometimes messier months of Winter.

Mowing Regularity Over Winter

Due to reduced growth rates of lawns over winter, lawn mowing regularity will not need to be as frequent as is required during the warmer months. A healthy lawn which is being mowed every 2 weeks in Summer, will generally benefit for many reasons from mowing every 4 weeks in Winter.

Some lawns however may completely stop growing for a few weeks over winter, so for those lawns cutting every 6 weeks might be more suitable, or even skipping a single monthly cut over the colder months might be another option.

Consider Your Lawn Mowing Contractor

If you like your lawn mowing contractor, then it’s worthwhile to consider his situation as well in the colder months. It goes with the job description that the lawn mowing man knows and expects that his income will be reduced every Winter, and he plans for that seasonal income shift, as his lawn mowing work slows dramatically and his income reduces accordingly.

While he does pick up some cleanup work for weedy overgrown yards in this season, maybe some gardening work too, and a few once off mowing jobs, and while he too might take some time off while he can, the truth remains for the lawn mowing contractor that he has a tougher time each year when Winter rolls around again.

To have understanding customers who continue to have their lawns mowed over Winter is very important to each lawn mowing contractor. Obviously lawn mowing frequencies are extended over these cooler months, yet value continues to be added with each lawn mowing service to the customer who keeps their lawns in tip top shape throughout the year. And when we consider from the lawn mowing contractor’s perspective, we might easily see that he would more greatly esteem those clients who continue to have their lawns serviced throughout Winter as well, perhaps at 4 weekly service cycles rather than the usual 2 weekly cycle of Summer, over those clients who may perhaps cancel the service completely in Winter.
