Lawn Fertilisers Can Stain Paths and Paving
Lawn Fertilisers Can Stain Paths and Paving

Clickbait title? You betcha !! But truly, when considering this article title I really did not know any other way to convince people to click the link to read this very important information. Information I believe all lawn owners should read if they are ever going to apply fertilisers to their lawns. Yes, lawn fertilisers can cause permanent property damage, read on and let me explain.

Lawn fertilisers can contain any number of different nutrients, all of which are vital to plant and lawn health. Fertiliser manufacturers will combine these nutrients in varying proportions and of varying qualities into any one of their products as they themselves so deem suitable for both the homeowners and for their own company targets as to what types and qualities of fertilisers they themselves wish to specialise in and market.

Iron In Lawn Fertilisers

A very important minor or trace element in some but not all lawn fertilisers is Iron.

Iron is especially beneficial to have in our lawn fertilisers that we apply prior to and during Winter, as Iron will help to keep our lawns strong, green and healthy over the coldest months of the year.

Iron, as we all know, develops Rust when it comes into contact with water.

And once we apply fertilisers to our lawn, we then must water our lawns to begin the breakdown process of the fertiliser granules into the soil. So here we have Iron and we’re mixing it with water.

Iron In Fertilisers Causing Property Damage

This Iron content is of course no concern to our lawns, for most of us anyway. Though we do find in some parts of Australia like Perth that use bore water with a high Iron content on their lawns and gardens that huge parts of these gardens, such as fences, pathways, clothes lines, sides of houses, and even poorly parked cars, will all develop rust coloured staining over the years, which is impossible to remove.

For the rest of us without the heavy Iron content bore water, our great concern, and the reason for this clickbait title is that if we apply our lawn fertilisers which contain Iron even a little carelessly to our lawns, or if we don’t follow good procedure after we’ve applied that fertiliser, and we then water our lawns, then we ourselves can create great black stains on anything which surrounds our lawns, such as pathways, paving, garden furniture, garden ornaments etc.

Proper Procedure For Applying Fertilisers With Iron

If we are applying fertilisers to our lawn, which contain Iron, then we should take extra care.

Apply the fertiliser as usual, and per manufacturers spread rate recommendations.

Now sweep or blow clean all surrounding pathways or other items such as garden furniture. This is very important, even if it appears that no fertiliser granules are present on these other surfaces, clean them anyway, as even the tiniest missed fertiliser particle will create a large black stain which is permanent and ugly.

Once the fertiliser has been applied and all surrounding surfaces or items around the lawn are blown or swept clean, we can then water our lawns as per usual.

Iron in fertilisers can easily cause property damage to different parts of our yards if we don’t take proper care, and this damage will be seen most often in the permanent black staining of pathways and paving surrounding lawn areas.

A simple quick clean of surrounding areas will alleviate this potential problem for us.

Fertilisers without any Iron content will not create this problem, and pose no risk of staining.
